How to keep your wrought iron gates in pristine condition

  • Post category:General

Wrought iron has long been a desirable material from which to construct gates and railings. For centuries, people have opted for wrought iron gates for both security and aesthetic purposes. Here at SL Wrought Iron, we manufacture our products on a supply-only basis, so each gate and railing can be entirely bespoke. We utilise time-served methods to expertly hand craft stunning custom gates that stand the test of time for our valued customers. So you can be sure that when you choose to get your wrought iron gates from us, you’re getting a beautiful custom gate that will last decades.

With our gates, you’ll never have to worry about rust

Wrought iron gates don’t require a great deal of maintenance – ours especially. Unlike many other wrought iron gate suppliers, we offer our products with the option of a galvanised and powder coated finish. This galvanising treatment involves the steel being submerged into a bath of molten zinc at temperatures of 499 degrees Celsius. The liquid zinc alloys itself to the surface of the gate and prevents rusting, and produces a shiny silver exterior.

This can protect your gate for up to 70 years. Results may vary if you live nearer to the coast, even still though, a wrought iron gate will still last much longer than other gate materials such as wood.

After we’ve dipped your gate in the zinc galvanising treatment, we then apply a coat of powder. This powered coating is applied electrostatically to the gate, which is then baked in an oven to flatten the paint. It’s this process which gives our gates a much tougher exterior finish that’s much longer lasting than traditional spray paint, making it the perfect option if you’re looking for rust prevention and maintenance-free steelwork.

We provide this finish as standard, so you don’t have to worry about your gates rusting, enabling us to even further reduce the very little maintenance that the gate needs.

Cleaning your wrought iron gates

As we touched on earlier, wrought iron gates are incredibly durable, and generally speaking they require very little upkeep. However, there are few small acts of maintenance we encourage our customers to carry occasionally to keep their gates looking as beautiful as the day they got them for years to come.

Every now and then wrought iron gates will need a general dusting with a soft cloth. If more cleaning is needed, use warm, diluted soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth to clean off any dirt/debris that has built up over the months. Then simply rinse with clean water.

You can also pressure wash on a low, gentle setting if you wish. Just make sure you don’t get too close to the gate or else you risk damaging the finish. Harsh chemicals are unnecessary and can also damage the finish of your gate so it’s best to steer clear of those.

And that’s all there is to it! There’s a reason that wrought iron metal gates are just as popular now as they were centuries ago! Here at SL Wrought Iron, we have more than 30 years of experience to our name and our bespoke gates are made by expert craftsmen right here in Lancashire.

That gives us all the in-house expertise we need to provide metal gates and railings of market-leading quality. It also means we know our products inside out, and we’re well-versed in all the different settings and applications in which they can be used. It also means that if you have any questions about our wrought iron gates or railings, or if you need any help or in-depth advice, you can count on us to provide it.
