To guide you through the process of ordering with SL Wrought Iron, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions.

We specialise in the handcrafting of wrought iron style metal gates and railings. View our extensive range of products here. All can be purchased online and delivered throughout mainland UK.

We manufacture products in a range of sizes. You can find full details on our Products page.

Yes, we offer a bespoke, made-to-measure service, so you don’t need to worry if you can’t find the size you need. This popular service can often be provided at no extra cost.

All orders include our standard fixing kit. This includes everything you need to fix your product between two hard surfaces. Posts can be added to your order, if required.

Please refer to our measuring guide (see below) for full details on how to take accurate measurements. If you’re unsure about anything, please just get in touch.

Our recommended finish is galvanised and powder coated. Hot dipped galvanising (to British standard EN ISO 1461)  is a zinc galvanising treatment where steel is submerged into a bath of molten zinc at 449 degrees Celsius. The liquid zinc alloys itself to the surface of the metal to prevent rusting.

The provides an anti-corrosion coating that leaves a bright silver appearance and protects the metal from rusting for up to 70 years, but this can vary depending on how far you live from the coast.

We then powder coat on top of the galvanised finish.

Powder coating starts as a dry powder that is electrostatically applied onto the metal, it is then baked in an oven to flatten the paint and give it a much tougher finish than conventional spray paint, making it the perfect coating for  maintenance free decorative steelwork.
For those customers looking to make initial savings, we also offer all products in a primed only finished (grey), ready for painting. In order to prevent rusting, this finished will require regular painting and maintenance.

Details of these finishes can be found on our Products page.

All of our gates can be adjusted by up to 25mm (1 inch).

When you’ve placed your order, we’ll be in touch to arrange a suitable delivery date and an AM or PM drop off. Someone must be able to accept the order. If you’re not in to take the delivery, you will be charged for re-delivery.

Your order will be placed on a pallet and will be delivered to the kerbside of the delivery address. We recommend that you have assistance at your end to help unload the delivery, as its up to the driver’s discretion if they assist you.

All our gates and railings come with a 10-year workmanship guarantee. They are handcrafted in the UK to a very high standard.

You can contact us via our Contact page.

Any questions at all, please just ask.

Our installation guide provides clear and detailed instructions on how to install your product.

We can offer an installation service at locations that are within 16 miles of our factory (postcode BB5 6NT).

Please contact us for more information.

NO, orders cannot be cancelled, as all orders are bespoke,  (no items are held in stock) as each item is made to the customers specifications (size, design, finish). As the items are made to your specification, this puts them outside of the consumers contracts (information, cancellation and additional charges) regulations 2013.

If the order is still with us, and is in the early stages of manufacturing (within 3 days of order being placed), then we would offer a 50% refund on cancelled orders

All goods are supplied to you,  include a 10-year workmanship guarantee

The workmanship guarantee we offer on our gates and railings is a reflection of how much we believe in our product. The 10 year long workmanship guarantee on the metal products we offer covers the work of the manufacturing process and the structural integrity of the welding performed on the gate or railing. It is highly unlikely that you will experience any issues with your gate or railings but should that happen –  you are covered.

Metal gates/railings that have had a primed only finish applied will need additional paint added as soon as they are fitted or left in outside conditions, open to the elements. Rust will appear if scratched, knocked or chipped. It can  show around the weld points where there is slight air pockets or on the top of gates where water may sit throughout the year. If this occurs it will be down to the customer to give the area a rub down and apply more paint.

Metal gates/railings that have had a galvanised and powder coated finish  will have very long lasting protection against rust, although this does also depend on how far away you live from the coast.

It is important to understand that the rust protection is the silver zinc finish underneath the paint finish, not the paint itself, as this is just an added layer of protection and cosmetic.

We do not guarantee the finish on moving parts such as drop bars and latches, or chips, scratches or dints as the results of a bang. It remains the customers responsibility to regularly touch up any chips and wear from moving parts .

Note that any nuts and bolts included in the fittings packs must be painted after fitting.

Measurement Guide

Our garden gates are designed to fit between 2 hard surfaces, and you will receive everything you need, in our free fixing’s kits, which is included with the price of your garden gate.

It is the customers responsibility to make sure that these surfaces are strong enough to take the weight of the garden gate.

The  garden gate can also have posts (extra cost), which can either be concreted in or fixed to a wall or hard surface.

For measuring, you will need to tell us the gap the  garden gate is fitting into and we will make all the calculations for you.

For example: if your gap is 3ft (912mm), the garden gate would be less as we would subtract off the width of the hinges, hinge bracket or posts and catch

All  garden gates come with adjustable hinges, that can be adjusted up to 1” or 25mm, so there is some adjustment room. This comes in handy if the walls or hard surfaces that you are fixing onto are slightly  out of level.

Please note: Garden gate heights are as specified on the website, so you would need to allow for clearance under the  garden gate.  If ordering posts,  please be advised that the posts are 2” or 50mm longer at the bottom, this is our standard clearance size, but may need to be adjusted if more clearance is required.

If customers are fixing between 2 hard surfaces, and they are not parallel, because 1 or both are slightly out of level, our advice is to measure between the walls in 3 places – top, middle and bottom, then work out an average for ordering your garden gate.

If in doubt, please contact us and we would be able to talk you through the process, or even send some photos and measurements of the area, and we would be happy to help.

Our tall side gates are designed to fit between 2 hard surfaces, and you will receive everything you need, in our free fixing’s kits, which is included with the price of your tall side gate.

It is the customers responsibility to make sure that these surfaces are strong enough to take the weight of the tall side gate.

When ordering railings, they are designed to fit between 2 hard surfaces.  Each railing section comes with 4 slotted brackets, included in the price, that can either fix to a wall/hard surface or our steel posts (optional extra item).

The slotted fixing brackets have a 25mm/1” slot, that gives an adjustment of half an inch or 12mm on each side of the railing. We advise, if ordering to fit between walls, that you allow 12mm/0.5” clearance, to make sure that the railing fits. (ie 6mm each side=12mm in total)

Railings can also be set out in most configurations, to suit your project, by adding steel posts.  Our posts are 50mm x 50mm or 2”x2”, they are universal so can be end posts, intermediate posts or corner posts. When working out you can use our standard sizes, and every time a post is added, also add 50mm or 2”. You could then order a non-standard size panel to make up the difference, as the last panel. (We do not charge extra for this, just the closest standard size for price)

Driveway gates are designed to fit between 2 hard surfaces and you will receive everything included in the price of your gate to do this.

It is the customers responsibility to make sure that these surfaces are strong enough to take the weight of the gates.

Drive way gates can also have posts at an extra cost, to be concreted in or fixed to a wall or hard surface.

Depending on the size of the  driveway gates, SL Wrought Iron will provide the correct sized posts.

For measuring, you will need to tell us the gap that the driveway gates are fitting into and we will make the calculations for you.

For example, if your gap is 6ft wide (1824mm), the driveway gate would be less as we would subtract off the width of the hinges, hinge brackets or posts, and also for the gap between the gates.

Driveway gates come with adjustable hinges that ca be adjusted up to 1” or 25mm, so there is some adjustment room.
