How Baroque style architecture affected the style of your wrought iron gates

  • Post category:General

Metal gates have been protecting our properties, vehicles and precious locations for centuries. In fact, it’s said that the earliest metal gates appear in history as far back as the mighty Roman Empire, symbolising wealth and power. These days, your metal gates symbolise style and security. And at SL Wrought Iron, we take great pride in crafting bespoke mild steel gates and railings in our Lancashire factory, meeting the unique specifications of our customers whilst ensuring the highest quality and security standards.

As robust and reliable as they are, mild steel gates have gone through quite a transformation throughout the centuries. Today, we have multiple beautiful time-honed styles of metal railings and gates that owe mainly to the styles and designs of bygone eras. While there are many influences on the designs of the gates and fences we know and love today, we’re taking a deeper look into how Baroque architecture affected the style of your wrought iron gates.

What does Baroque mean?

The Baroque movement was a cultural and artistic movement that spread throughout Europe from the early 17th to the mid-18th century. The term “baroque” originated from the Portuguese word “barocco,” which means irregular pearl or stone. The Baroque style is characterised by its dramatic, opulent, and detailed features, which inspired the creation of the ornate gates that we now see adorning many period properties and churches. The style is very much inspired and influence by the last prominent art style to come before: the Renaissance.

An overview of Baroque architecture

Baroque architecture is well known in the design world for its extravagance, making it a highly influential style. The bold patterns and intricate details that characterise Baroque architecture were also reflected in the metal gates at the time, often featuring bold patterns, elaborate floral motifs, and intricate scrollwork, many of these motifs which we still use today in our more ornate designs here at SL Wrought Iron (although as you’d expect, we’ve put out own creative spin on them!).
